Pain Medication
In a Nutshell
After you give birth, your healthcare provider may offer you medication to help with postpartum pain. Postpartum pain may look different depending on how your labor went, whether you gave birth vaginally or via caesarean section, if any instruments were used during birth, and if you have any perineal tears. Depending on the severity of your pain will depend on which type of medication is offered to you. Medications may range from things like acetaminophen and ibuprofen to stronger narcotic medications like oxycodone.
Dig Deeper
Some people compare labor and birth to running a marathon. Labor, contractions, and moving into different positions can cause your muscles to feel sore. Having a vaginal birth can cause perineal swelling and tearing and having a caesarean section is a huge abdominal surgery.
Giving birth is unique because, although you may be in pain, your pain may not be managed like it would if you didn’t just have a baby. There are a lot of things to think about when it comes to medication right after birth
