Cervical/Vaginal Exams

In a Nutshell

The cervix is the “neck” of the womb between your vagina and uterus/baby.
During pregnancy it is firm, thick, and closed tight. During late pregnancy and during birth it softens, thins, and opens.

Your provider can use their fingers to feel your cervix to gain information. Cervical exams (aka vaginal exams) won't predict the future but they can let you know what your body has done so far. This information can be helpful if you need to make a decision.

As with any decision, it is your body and you have a say in what happens. You can ask for a cervical exam if you feel like that information would be helpful to you and you can also decline a cervical exam if you do not want it done. Talk with your provider to decide when an exam may be medically necessary or just preferred.

Dig Deeper

The following can be determined by your care provider during a vaginal exam:

  • Baby’s "station:" How high/low baby is. The ischial spines (around the hip bones) is 0 station. If baby is above that line station is -1, -2, -3. Below the ischial spines is +1, +2, and +3 (basically baby is crowning).Negative numbers means baby is higher, positive numbers means baby is lower.
